A story of language exploration

For over 50 years, Education First has been opening the world through education. As an in-house copywriter in their Creative Studio, my goal was to share their language education and travel programs with the world. From blog posts to landing pages, printed sales letters and detailed brochures, here’s just a small slice of what I got up to during my EF life. This was not just about sharing language exploration with aspiring travellers, but exploring the craft of language as the early-career copywriter that I was at the time.

Once upon a brand

EF Education First opens the world through language and travel programmes. I was a young copywriter, working to share the travel and language learning dream that I was actually currently living after moving from England to the EF headquarters in German-speaking Zürich.

We embarked on a journey

Much of my time here was spent crafting copy and managing print materials, most of all their international brochures. Distributed to sales markets around the globe, these brochures contain all the nitty-gritty information every potential student needed to know about before they book a course, and shared the experience of every destination and language school. One fun project involved an informational flyer, which I decided to turn it into a travel journal for young prospective students, so that even in the initial sales consultations, they can already start imagining, planning, and writing about their dream trip. But all this is just a small aspect of the journey at EF, where I also supported with digital copy for many other channels, from social media to their language and travel blog, EF Go.

“Finola is a talented and creative writer, always eager to read more, learn more and become better at her craft. She contributed greatly to the development of EF's tone and voice and showed what she can do across a range of print and digital projects. She's also a lovely person to have in the team.”

And in the end, we found ourselves somewhere better

My time at EF set the foundations for my career and taught me so much about my craft. It taught me to think deeply about my audience. This was where I began practicing tailoring my copy to varied audiences. Whether it was young travellers or adults looking to advance their careers through language learning, each required a different creative approach. Most of all, I discovered that copywriting is often about sharing an experience, so that your audience can travel with you to where you need them to go, immersing them in sights, sounds, and tastes they have yet to experience. I’ve taken that learning into everything I do.
